Spotify for iPhone available now

by: Chris Hudson
7 September, 2009

Back in July we told you that Spotify had submitted an iPhone app to Apple for approval for the iTunes store.

Like most people we thought Apple would try and find a way to not approve the app given its potential effect of sales of downloadable songs from the iTunes store.

However, the Spotify iPhone app is available for download from the Apple store today.

As Spotify is a European service it is not available to users outside of Europe and it is only useable by Premium Spotify account holders i.e. those who pay the £9.99 per month

Turbo-boosted Opera 10 browser debuts for Windows and Mac

by: Chris Hudson

The latest incarnation of the Opera web browser has just been released for Mac and Windows users.

Version 10 of Opera features a Speed Dial page which is similar to the Top Sites idea that is so popular with of Safari 4.0 web browser.

The Opera 10 interface has been redesigned and looks nice and simple and feels uncluttered compared to some of the competition. It also felt subjectively fast when I gave it a spin earlier today.

It may also appeal to UK users who are stuck with slow connection speeds as it features Opera Turbo which uses Opera’s servers to compress Web pages, boosting and accelerating connections to a crowded Wi-Fi in a cafe or a tethered mobile phone.

It includes a password manager, an inline spell checker and an email client.

It is certainly worthy of a test drive particularly those who have yet to give up Internet Explorer for Firefox!

Firefox to auto check for Flash vulnerabilites

by: Chris Hudson
6 September, 2009

Mozilla have announced that Firefox’s next update, which ships on Tuesday, will check for outdated versions of Flash Player - a plug-in that has become something of a favoured method of entry for hackers recently.

Mozilla is making a point against Adobe, Apple, Sun and Microsoft for shipping out-of-date, vulnerable, plug-ins.

As a Snow leopard user I discovered that not only had it shipped with an out-of-date version of Flash Player but that it had also replaced the up-to-date version that I already had on my Mac! So Mozilla has identified a clear security need and is stepping in to fill the breaches caused by lazy vendors.

Firefox 3.5.3 and Firefox 3.0.14, which are the security updates for Firefox 3.5 and Firefox 3.0, respectively, are due for release on 8th September.

After installing the updates, Firefox end-users will see the following warning message if their PC or Mac has an out-of-date version of Flash Player installed,

“You should update Adobe Flash right now. Firefox is up to date, but your current version of Flash can cause security and stability issues. Please install the free update as soon as possible.”

The message will include a link to download the latest Flash Player plug-in.

Johnathan Nightingale of the Firefox security team blogged that “as many as 80% of users currently have an out-of-date version” of Flash Player installed.

Nightingale also mentioned in his blog that Mozilla intend to extend this auto check scheme to other plug-ins,
“Mozilla will work with other plug-in vendors to provide similar checks for their products in the future. Keeping your software up to date remains one of the best things you can do to keep yourself safe online, and Mozilla will continue to look for ways to make that process as easy as possible for its users”.

Is your WordPress blog food for worms?

by: Chris Hudson
5 September, 2009

Is your WordPress blog running on the latest version of the self-hosted blog software?

If not your blog could quickly become food for worms - well, one worm in particular that is doing the rounds of out-of-date, unpatched WordPress blogs.

This worm exploits a security bug that allows evaluated code to be executed through the permalink structure, makes itself an admin user, then uses JavaScript to hide itself so you can’t see it if you look at the users page - it also attempts to clean up after itself and finally inserts hidden spam and malware into your old posts.

The danger of a worm like this is that your website could be banned from Google for hosting malware or being used for spamming.

The cure is a simple one, thankfully, just make sure you are running the latest version of WordPress, 2.8.4

In fact, the security vulnerability was fixed in the previous release, so you can get away with running 2.8.3.
But upgrading WordPress has been made simpler over the versions and now it really is a “one-click fix”.

As a hosting company we promote this type of news as we believe this simple upgrading is part of being a good ‘virtual’ neighbour to other users on shared web servers. If you allow your blog to be breached by this worm and be banned from Google, then other customers who share your web server (and its IP address) could also find their websites removed from Google’s index - guilt by association!

So please take a few seconds to check that your WordPress blog software is 2.8.3 or higher - and hope that your virtual neighbours are doing the same!

Free Windows 7 RTM 90 day trial

by: Chris Hudson
3 September, 2009

Microsoft are offering a 90 day free trial of the final version of Windows 7 Enterprise Edition.

Microsoft state that the free trial is for IT professionals only, however, apart from a short form to complete before downloading, they make no effort to verify this is the case.

The free download will be available until March 31st, 2010 or until a certain number of copies have been downloaded.

After the 90 day trial is complete Windows 7 will shut down the PC after an hour’s operation. Users will then have to buy Windows 7 and perform a clean install - ie one that requires a reinstallation of all applications.
