Intrahost offset their CO2 emissions with Rainforest Concern

In May 2007, Intrahost became one of the first completely carbon neutral hosting providers.

We are committed to doing our bit for the environment, and helping you feel good about hosting your systems with us. We chose Rainforest Concern as our partner to help us offset our CO2 emissions. See “Why we chose Rainforest Concern” for details.

This is the process we followed:

Audit

Firstly, we analysed our electricity usage in our both offices and data centres. We also calculated the annual tonnage of CO2 emitted from our business travel / transport.

Reduce

The most important step to responsible environmental practice is to reduce energy consumption. We undertook a programme of reducing our CO2 emissions and therefore costs. This included ensuring all our electronic systems where possible and appropriate were set to power-saving modes. We also encourage clients to host using Virtual Private Servers as these are highly energy efficient.

Offset

We calculated a ‘per tonne cost’ for our total annual CO2 emissions. This is the amount that will allow Rainforest Concern to protect and plant an area of rainforest capable of absorbing an equivalent amount of CO2. Our offset donation is invested in one of their projects.

Evaluate

Ongoing we monitor, evaluate and report on our CO2 emissions, and look for opportunities to further reduce our carbon footprint.
